Fred Phelps. Founder of godhatesfags.com, godhatesamerica.com, godhatescanada.com, godhatessweden.com, smellthebrimstone.com, etc, etc. He and his followers (between 80 and 100% of which are his family members, even young children) have protested at the funerals of soldiers. He also preaches that 9/11, the tsunami, hurricane Katrina, murders, and virtually any natural disaster were caused by God's hate for homosexuality and "Thanks God" that they happened.
So. Cult leader or just an angry person? Does he have the right to preach the way he does or is it crossing the line? Where is the line between what is religious expression and what is a crime of hate? Discuss.
My thoughts: Phelps interperates the bible literally, BUT ONLY when it supports his beliefs. He has brainwashed his family and shows many warning signs of cult leaders. It's not just a problem for his hometown or state; it's a problem for all of America and the world.

The koran is against homosexuality
People who are like this risk being fundamentalists and not being able to percieve other peoples view points. Angry people need to calm down. Does this guy know anything about silence? It doesn't seem like it.

I think some people require a liscence before they can have children.

It makes you wonder why we can't get along....what a waste to project all that hate into energy when it could be used to look inside & see exactly what is missing in their life. Then again, it is always much easier to point the finger at someone else when soemthing is wrong!

Just wondering...did any of you see the interviews with Shirley Phelps-Roper (Fred Phelp's daughter, I think)..One was on Hannity & Colmes..cant remember where the other was... Listening to their arguing is just mind-numbing... but I suppose it's just..I dunno..lessons for society as a whole?
Recently there was a man whom called himself Brother Micah who, along with his wife, came to campus every day for a week preaching messages quite similar to the Phelps'. Needless to say, he drew quite a crowd..some of us would go talk with him every day and listen as he called students various..um..unsavory things..and urged us all to repent while in the very next breath condemning us all to hell.
Why?
People like Brother Micah and those of the Westboro Baptist Church (the Phelps') spark some serious conversation and debate. They create situations in which people are constantly defining and rediscovering what it is they believe and why.. End result? We learn tons about ourselves and others.. So I guess the conflict is very good in a way... There is purpose behind it.. But it is sad to watch...
