Myth #1: A diet without meat cannot easily provide enough protein for good health. Myth #2: The quality of plant protein is inadequate to meet our needs. Myth #3: Iron deficiency anemia is a likely outcome of the switch to a vegetarian diet.
None of these statements is true; each is based on research and thinking from a bygone era. In fact, there are no nutrients essential to human life found in meat that are not also found in plant foods.

I have been vegetarian at various stages in my life for various reasons (not currently). I have learnt a lot about balancing a vegetarian diet during those times. No single plant contains all seven ammino acids (protein components) needed in human diet. There are actually 25 ammino acids but the human metabolism can make the others itself. You can achieve a perfect balanced dietary protein with a 50/50 mix of legume seeds (beans, peas, peanuts, etc) and sunflower seeds, but this is expensive. Most grains contain the same ammino acids as sunflower seeds but in a lower concentration. (Your body will excrete "surplus" ammino acids in order to balance your protein, so balancing your protein intake has the same effect as eating more protein) The ammino acid most frequently lacking is lysine, which tomatoes are rich in. If changing to a vegetarian diet, you will need to eat a lot more bean products. If you still eat cheese, then increasing the ammount of that you eat will be good to. However, the best advice I can give you is to trust your instincts on what to eat and how much. Your subconscious knows what you need and it pays not to ignore it.

Please, don't say it's "expensive".
A vegetarian diet versus a non-veg. diet, in the overall cost of life, is not more expensive. Eating meat costs the world more than any one person could ever make in their lifetime. That's the bottom line. It is about consciousness, and all the choices one could make.
There are more people eating rice and beans in the world, than all the people in rich countries combined. That is the best reason to enjoy vegetarianism.

oh, no, I'm not saying a vegetarian diet is expensive, but sunflower seeds are, which is unfortunate because they are the perfect compliment to soy.

the only thing hard to get from a veg diet is vitamin b12. i take a daily (veg) supplement. ;D be careful, most supplements are not veg due to gelatin capsules (boiled animal tendons, bones, skin..) i also take a daily (veg) multivitamin, just for insurance. it's probably not needed since i eat well but it's good to capture the spectrum just incase. if you are scared you aren't getting all that you need, you can always do that. if anyone wants info on what supplements i get and from where, just ask ever since switching to an organic vegan diet, i've felt so much better in so many ways. beans, grains, fruits, vegetables....

I've been told that just eating legumes or nuts/seeds alone for protein is not enough, because they are not a "complete protein" like meat is. However, if you eat lugumes with a carbohydrate (dhal and rice for example), the combination of the two creates a complete protein.
One of the reason why I haven't completely abandoned meat (still eat a bit of fish) is because I've bean concerned about my protein and iron intake (I tend to be slightly anaemic). I take a multivitamin every day, as well as iron tablets.
I have tons of recipes if anyone wants any...
